SMS is an architectural firm based in Mexico which wanted to have a small US-based office in Boston to fit 6 workstations, 1 conference room, 1 bathroom and storage space.
The challenge of this project was to create a compelling design that would fit within a budget of $125/sf or PHP77,000/sqm which was only 42% of the conventional build cost for commercial projects at that time.
We were able to meet this budget by procuring ready-made furniture and finish material such as pegboards, wood countertops, laminated furniture, and powder-coated steel shelving and angles and slighly modifying to suit the needs of the space.
The concept was to create a structure within a structure through framing its perimeter walls with birch plywood and hand-finishing with blackened oil to reveal the wood grain.
